Unix timestamp converter
Turn the numbers in a log into a date you can read, in UTC and your own time zone at once — or turn a date into Unix time. The unit is worked out from the number of digits.

Reading timestamps in logs
- Compare in UTC. Logs from different servers line up only in one zone; convert to local time last.
- Watch for the unit. A millisecond timestamp read as seconds lands tens of thousands of years in the future.
- Daylight saving shifts local time, never Unix time or UTC — another reason to keep logs in UTC.
What is Unix time?
The number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. It has no time zone, which is why logs and databases favour it.
How does it know seconds from milliseconds?
By length. Present-day times are 10 digits in seconds, 13 in milliseconds, 16 in microseconds and 19 in nanoseconds.
Why are dates without a time zone read as UTC?
Because server logs are overwhelmingly written in UTC. Add an offset such as +09:00 to the date if yours is not.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. Conversion runs in your browser.
